Background

Originally built as a hide and skin warehouse in 1911, it has since had an additional two storeys built, a contemporary extension added onto the east side and undergone several internal changes reflecting the various businesses it has accommodated to

Client brief

The clients of this project purchased unit 2 as an empty shell. This 144 square meter, two-storey unit, located on the first and second floors, required a complete fit out, taking into consideration the existing windows, timber columns and exposed timber ceiling.

This apartment posed the difficulty of having large windows along two of the four existing walls on both levels. The challenge was to design a layout that made the best use of each space whilst adhering to the clients’ desire to remain open and spacious.

The clients had a clear direction for the apartment, taking inspiration from the industrial nature of the building and having this reflected through to the interiors.

They requested an urban atmosphere with emphasis on bold colors, and recycled and raw materials which complement their existing eclectic furniture and artworks.

Concept

The end result is a mixture of a playful yet sleek design using splashes of bold colours such orange, and purple. The lower floor consists of a spacious entry space, colourful galley kitchen, laundry and storage and generous living and dining area.

At the top of the grey anodised enclosed staircase is a master bedroom with a large ensuite on the right, and a guest bedroom and a bathroom on the left.

Concrete in situ is left untouched in entry area, whereas timber flooring is used in the kitchen and upstairs in bedrooms.

Most appliance such fridge, kettle, toaster are in bright colour such orange from Smeg retro’s collection and a kitchen island is in gloss purple finished.
