Background
At Old soul with new life Flour Mill, Summer Hill, there are 14 residential buildings in the development, to be constructed in two stages. Stage 1 includes four unique retail offerings, while Stage 2 involves the refurbishment of the beautiful Mungo Scott building for an eclectic, carefully curated mix of very cool retail, food and beverage concepts.
Client brief
A 44 yr. Turkish client Mehmet Tunc who works as a head chef at The Boiler House, Manly, decided to open a Turkish tea house restaurant near his home in the inner western suburb of Summer Hill, Sydney. The requirement was to create a design which would accommodate sunny outdoor seating to cater for families with children.
The client's colour preferences were geometric patterns, blue and white colours and he also wanted the design to be minimal, clean, with a simple palette, outdoor seating and some lovely Turkish ornaments such as Turkish tea glass, chandelier, etc.
Concept
To corporate his love of Islamic geometric patterns, that are often built on combinations of repeated squares and circles which may be overlapped and interlaced to form intricate and complex patterns that may retreat into the background around other motifs.
I have created round, stained glass tables used throughout the restaurant in different shades, as well as steel, and copper shelving units suspended from the ceiling in the kitchen to display Turkish ornaments.
The kitchen was designed using a circular floor plan with a round cooktop bar and seamless metal work along one wall. On the wall opposite the kitchen food distribution I have placed a wait station with POS and small storage, catering for the smooth running of a front of house service.
Round, pink leather upholstery is used in the private dining area next to the kitchen and a beautiful, slim air purifier fitted into a metal shelving unit above the kitchen cooktop.
To extend the organic shapes of the kitchen fittings, I have drawn an organically curved bar as well as an organic shaped sofa in the public dining area at the front as the patrons enter/exit the premises.
